Proper lubrication of your Shaw-Box hoist parts is an essential step to ensure the safety and longevity of your crane. It’s essential to perform all lubrication services before the initial operation. After the initial operation, services must be performed every six months. It’s suggested to lubricate during the spring and fall seasons so you can perform a “cold test” oil.
Each Shaw-Box hoist part has different requirements for proper lubrication. The frequency and type of grease will vary depending on the part.
- Lubrication of Limit Switch – Use a small amount of multipurpose grease (MPG) on the bevel gear of the rotary geared limit switch.
- Lubrication of Hoisting Cable – Hoisting cables do not have an exterior coating of grease when shipped from the manufacturer. We recommend thoroughly coating the cable at installation and ensuring it’s kept lubricated. Use a cable or wire rope lubricant to grease the hoisting cable.
- Lubrication of Geared Trolley Wheels and Pinions – Apply wheel gear and pinion grease before initial operation and periodically to these parts.
- Lubrication of Rope Guide – Regularly lubricate the rope guide with multipurpose grease. Twice a year, it’s suggested to remove the rope guide for cleaning and inspection. Once it’s reassembled, thoroughly grease the rope guide, wire rope, and drum.
When proper lubrication services are followed, you’re less likely to experience issues with your hoist. Even when following essential lubrication services, regular inspections are still vital. Inspections allow you to find issues before they become a big problem.
